Parents step into the Ring to Fundraise for Junior Rugby Clubs

Nā Shakayla Andrews-Alapaki tēnei atikara.

A local boxing event gives mums and dads a chance to fundraise for their children’s junior rugby league and union clubs.

The event, Code Wars, is organised by former professional boxer Reece Papuni, aims to support local clubs while giving back to the community. Papuni said the events are designed to help organisations stay afloat during tough times.

“All of this goes back to our young people.” he said.

Clubs involved include Ōtautahi Rugby, Marist Albion, Sydenham Swans, Waitaha Māori and the Addington Magpies, all of which have fully supported the initiative.

MŌ NGĀ TAMARIKI TE TAKE:

For 10 weeks, parents from rugby clubs across Waitaha have been training for the event. Elishia Halbert-Pere (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāi Tūāhuriri), representing Waitaha Māori Rugby Club, is one of the parents taking part.

“I tautokohia e au ngā kaupapa o te rīki me te whutupōro,” Halbert-Pere said.

Her whānau has also been involved in the training, with her son, Hunter, preparing to enter the ring. “Ka tono ahau ki ōku tamariki tokorua, me whakaputa kōrua mai i ō kōrua rūma. Ki ōku nei whakaaro me whakapiki ō rāua hauora. Nā reira i a rāua taenga, ka kite, ka ū, ka tono mai a Reece ki a mātou, ka hiahia koutou te uru ki roto i a Code Wars, ka taea tātou,” she said.

Sapa Toleafoa, whose children play for the Addington Magpies, has set up a Give a Little page to further support the club. “Just turning up to training helps the fundraiser and my son’s team, everything raised goes straight back to them through the community.” Toleafoa said.

It will be the first time both Halbert-Pere and Toleafoa enter the ring. “They’re our future stars. If we can pave the way for them, they can do the same for the next generation,” Toleafoa said.

AHAKOA HE MAMAE, ME HAERE TONU:

An injury has forced one parent to withdraw from the event. Huikoma Mitchell (Te Arawa) of Addington Magpies was scheduled to face Tommy Belford of Papanui Rugby League in the upcoming match but had to pull out after sustaining injuries last weekend while protecting his son from a dog attack. Mitchell injured his right hand and left leg.

“Just like our league club, we’re survivors. We're still here putting our best foot forward. But unfortunately, with three injuries, I won’t be able to compete anymore. Really mamae about that one,” he said.

Mitchell’s children also play for the Addington Magpies, and he has continued to support the club by attending training sessions and helping other parents, despite being on crutches.

“Just because we can't partake in it anymore doesn’t mean we give up on the kaupapa, you know, haere tonu. The goal was to get out there and fundraise for our juniors,” he said.

Belford will now fight Amara Folimatatama, replacing Mitchell. The parents are set to step into the ring on March 14, ready to give their all for the cause.

He kaupapa mekemeke mō ngā mātua kia penapena pūtea mō ngā karapū riki me te uniana o ā rātou tamariki.

Ko te aronga mō te kaupapa o ‘Code Wars’ kia tautoko i ngā karapū me te whakahoki ki te hāpori. Nā Reece Papuni tēnei kaupapa i whakarite, ka mutu, ko ngā kaupapa pēnei nā, he mea āki  i ngā wā taumaha.

AHAKOA HE MAMAE, ME HAERE TONU:

Kua puta atu tētahi pāpā mai i te whakataetae nā tētahi whara. Ko te manako ia ka tuki a Huikoma Mitchell nō Addington Magpies ki a Tommy Belford nō Papanui Rugby League heoi, i kakati tētahi kurī i tana tama. I ārai a Mitchell i tana tama, ā, i whara tōna ringa katau me tana waewae mauī.

“Just like our league club, we’re survivors. We're still here putting our best foot forward. But unfortunately, with three injuries, I won’t be able to compete anymore. Really mamae about that one,” ko tāna.
